Caffeine has been abandoned... and while it still works with the current Mac OS X, its definitely wonky. Amphetamine is not only a great replacement for Caffeine, but its better in many ways too. The custom on/off icons are a nice touch! Thanks!
there is no option for disable lid sleep. when i close my macbook lid it goes to sleep. and i dont like that. if this option will add to amphetamine it will be great..
This is similar to caffeine, but has more options/ uses. No, it wont keep your screen awake when you close the lid but thats not what it claims to do. What does it do? Everything else. Keeps your mac awake when using certain apps, keeps it awake on a schedule if you have one. This is my favorite, so while I study it stays awake. Whats niffty if that it auto turns off as well if your battery is low as not to drain the remaining battery (optional: but I like it). And if you like science you can change your icon to molecule which is rad. Download it, you wont be sorry. If it is to strong for you, then you can always go back to weaker stuff: caffeine.
Initial 5 star —> The wifi trigger to auto enable on specified network names. Get into work, stays awake on my desk all day. On the rare occasions I forget to turn it off (or forgot to turn off the previously used application I had for this, I leave to go home, turns itself off, computer sleeps, battery isn’t dead the next day (not to mention saving the precious cycle on the battery). Update to 4 star —>There is only one real complaint I have so far. If you use the trigger to enable when plugged up to power, it does not seem to let me manually override the state of it. Example: I have my computer plugged up and manually disable amphetamine. My preferred response would be that it stay disabled until the next trigger (say unplugging power and replugging). Instead the app immediately re-enables since the criteria is being met. The ability to force disable would be amazing. Update to 2 star —> The override issue also rears its head if you unplug the power adapter which trips to end the session. I go to manually re-enable as I am only moving conference rooms, but the program refuses to allow it since there is no power connected. The rules set seem to be in full time enforcement instead of only reacting AT the point the triggering event occured. Having to navigate settings, or even close the app, to manage whether or not your computer can sleep makes it MORE EFFORT to get the desired result than doing it 100% manually. If i make a manual change and then plug in or remove power, I understand the triggers configured would (and should) override, but should not persist as manual changes are made AFTER the fact to support the one-off instances you need to adapt to day to day circumstances.I will give the app a go here and there and raise my rating again if improves, but for now the issues have far outweighed the benefit.
I’d like to thank developers for this nice utility!
Works as advertised
I used to use Caffeine which was less than perfect, now an Amphetamine user and happy to say so far so good. I like to keep my display awake when at home doing work and listneing to music, but I have a 10 minute sleep preference while at school or in a public place, so this is a very useful app in my daily life.
This is what Caffeine should’ve been. Appreciate the schedule and triggering features! One small issue I’d like the developer to note is that when I have my MacBook Pro set to ‘keep on when power adapter attached’ and I switch to battery power, I get the prompt ‘Amphetamine can’t start a new session. Your Mac’s power adapter is not connected’ repeatedly even after pressing OK. It should default to just not keeping the Mac awake.
